Here’s what my son ( and his amazing assistants, mom and dad ) have been up to most of the month of October. Tombstones. Realistic, detailed and creepy Halloween decorations. Check it out:
My initial plan was to write a “how to” post with these – but it’s so complicated and detailed that I think a simple slide show is far more fun, so here you go:
Start with rigid insulation
Use a jig saw to cut out the shapes
A Dremel was used for the carving and lettering
Transferring type to the stone
The PVC pipe that will support the stone with rebar fitting inside the tubes and into the ground.
Glueing 2 pieces of foam together using foam board glue.
Detail of the base, caulking and wood filler covering seams and dents
Detail of stone with skull made of Model Magic and glued with foam board glue
The first coat of paint made of Drylok and exterior paint mixed together. Waterproof. It’s called “Monster Mud”.
First coat of paint (“Monster Mud”)
Detail of cracks and Dremel work, after the monster mud dries you can add black paint to recessed areas.
Dry brushing with white paint for an ageing effect
Add a little moss from Home Depot and a couple crows from Display and Costume and you are all done!
Happy Halloween from all of us at Hammer Like A Girl :)
